Renew.org just published my latest article regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) chatbots like ChatGPT for ministry. It’s the tightest and clearest case I’ve made against GenAI so far.
Too many of us are willing to jump in to new technology unintentionally, assuming the tool trope: it’s a tool, it’s how you use it that matters. We often don’t realize how we are changed when we adopt a technology—especially one that is wrapped in powerful layers of confusion, hype, and deception like today’s GenAI.
I created this helpful diagram to show how we are captivated by GenAI through four layers. Click through to the article to read the details.

This isn’t an argument from fear, ignorance, or reluctance to embrace the “new.” I’m a lifelong software engineer—a technologist. I’m also a Bible student and a lay church leader. Why would I want to keep my fellow ministry leaders from something helpful?
I wouldn’t.
But through my research, I’ve found that GenAI is actually harmful and antagonistic to Christian ministry goals. So I write to help you, my brothers and sisters, so you can avoid being taken in by the propaganda around this latest Big Tech fad.
In fact, if you’re involved in other spheres of life like education, industry, government, or most importantly, trying to raise your family, there are important takeaways in this article for you too.
I encourage you to read the article, and then come back here and comment if you’d like. I welcome your feedback.
